| Course: The Mineralogical Association of Canada is sponsoring the 'Len Berry' summer school on Archean Volcanology, August 2004. The principal instructor is Professor Ray Cas an internationally known volcanologist who works on ancient and modern volcanic rocks the world over. The workshop will be in-part based on a course that Professor Cas has given in Australia for 25 years. Participants will learn about the basic theory of volcanology, including the rheological, thermal and compositional properties that affect the architecture of important volcanic lithofacies. Comparisons will be made between modern and Archean volcanic terrains. The effects of superheating and undercooling will be explained in the generation of some unique Archean volcanological textures such as spinifex and varioles. A three-day field trip will allow for detailed analysis of many important rock types and outcrops and will provide adequate time for discussion amongst the participants and leaders.
